As the weather starts to cool slightly and the children head back to school, Labor Day Weekend is considered to be the last hurrah of summer. Spend it to its fullest with family and friends in the Suncoast! There are lots of fun things that you and your family can do that won’t break the bank and will keep you occupied during the long weekend!

Visit A Nearby State or National Park

Labor Day Weekend is the perfect time to go camping. Enjoy time with your family in the beautiful outdoors at one of the nearby state or national parks. You can pass the time exploring nature on a hike, playing games, telling stories, and cooking over the campfire. If you don’t want to spend the night, plan a day trip to one of the parks. They all offer tons of outdoor activities for you to spend the entire day. We recommend checking out these great nearby spots for your camping or day adventure:

Oscar Scherer State Park (1843 South Tamiami Trail, Osprey)

Lake Manatee State Park (20007 State Road 64 East, Bradenton)

Myakka River State Park (13208 State Road 72, Sarasota)

Stump Pass Beach State Park (900 Gulf Boulevard, Englewood)

De Soto National Memorial (8300 Desoto Memorial Highway, Bradenton)

Host a Barbeque Potluck for Family and Friends

Having a good ole barbeque is a Labor Day tradition! There is no better way than to enjoy the “final” weekend of summer outdoors, playing lawn games, and eating delicious food. But, that trip to the grocery store for the feast can add up. Help keep your barbecue more affordable and manageable by hosting a potluck! Ask everyone to bring a side dish to pass or a beverage to share. This way you can have a variety of delicious dishes and make sure that everyone leaves well fed. All you need to do is provide the location and the main meat (or vegetarian) dish for your guests!

Have a Staycation

When you call a city home, you often lose sight of the great attractions your community has to offer. Plan a “vacation” at home! Look up the local tourist websites for the Venice area and see what they recommend. Then pack a picnic for you and your family and go exploring. Try to focus on things outdoors in order to take advantage of the beautiful summer weather and look for places that you have never discovered. You will have a whole new appreciation for our communities and will save money by lodging at home during the staycation!

Check out a Local Event or Festival

There are always great local events and festivals occurring in the summer and with Labor Day being the unofficial “end” of the season, everyone wants to get in a last minute festival! The plus side to these festivals….they often have cheap or no admission costs! Have fun doing something new, eating some delicious food, and enjoying live entertainment at one of these events occurring this weekend:

70th Annual Labor Day Regatta

This amazing annual event is one of the biggest in the Suncoast. The Sarasota Sailing Squadron will host the regatta Friday, September 2nd, through Sunday, September 4th. With over 300 sailors competing and five different courses, there will be plenty of exciting races to watch all weekend. Also enjoy delicious barbeque and refreshments while listening to live music.

Englewood Pioneer Days

If you haven’t been able to stop by the festival all week, the last weekend of Englewood Pioneer Days cannot be missed. On Sunday, September 4th, and Monday, September 5th, your family will have lots of fun at this great festival. From vendors and giveaways, musicians and bands, and kids activities including a scavenger hunt, everyone will enjoy their Labor Day at Pioneer Days.

Sponge Docks Arts & Crafts Festival

Head over to the quaint town of Tarpon Springs for the Sponge Docks Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday, September 3rd, through Monday, September 5th. There will be over 90 vendors selling their unique arts and crafts! After finding some amazing treasures while shopping, explore the city that is rich in Greek heritage and dine on some delectable Greek dishes.

We wish you and your family a very safe and fun Labor Day Weekend!
