3rd Place!

Sarasota is no stranger to awards and accolades (lets call it the Meryl Streep of cities) and it has just received another high honor.  The credit card promoter NerdWallet has recently ranked Sarasota third best small city for retirees.  The company examined 971 cities with populations under 100,000.  They analyzed each based on the population of 65 and older; average home prices, healthcare quality (based on Medicare's Hospital Consumer Assesment of Healthcare Providers and Systems); whether or not the state taxes Social Security benefits; Median Household income growth (based on Census data); Unemployment; and access to public transportation.  Clearly, Sarasota scored high on all those points, beaten only by Fort Lee, New Jersey and Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

Obviously people flock to Sarasota for the sun and sandy beaches, not to mention Florida's great tax structure.  Almost a quarter of the population here are 65 or older and the state doesn't tax social security benefits, which is ideal, combine that with a median household income of 42,782 (which was a 6% growth rate for the period examined) and you are really on your way to living the good life.  The healthcare is fantastic, with almost 80% of patients surveyed, ranking Sarasota Memorial Hospital a 9 or 10 of 10.
