It’s time for a celebration! May 9th marks Venice’s 90th anniversary as a city! Venice Heritage Inc. is hosting the festivities this Tuesday on the grounds of the Lord-Higel House (409 Granada Avenue) from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Enjoy tours of the first floor of the 120 year old Lord-Higel House, which is Sarasota County’s 2nd oldest home. Cool down from water splashed by Old Betsy, Venice’s historic fire engine. Dine on delicious homemade lemon bars. Buy raffle tickets for your chance to stay in an Italian villa for a week. Help bury a time capsule that will be reopened for the city’s centennial in May 2027!

Florida’s legislature officially changed Venice’s designation from a town to a city on May 9th 1927. There are even more events planned to commemorate this special anniversary! The Venice City Council will be issuing a special proclamation on Tuesday morning. Then, don’t miss the Roaring '20s Costume Ball Fundraiser on June 10th. This fun event will be held at the Summit building (200 Nassau Street North) from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Tickets for the costume ball are only $10 a person. Swing by the Cashier’s Office in Venice City Hall (401 West Venice Avenue) to pick up yours.

Favorite Venice annual community events will be themed especially for the 90th anniversary. Venice Main Street’s Beach Party in September and the Women’s Sertoma Sun Fiesta in October will carry on the celebration. Watch our Blog for more information about these great events!
