Help the Loggerhead Sea Turtles Make it to the Sea!

by Nick and Beth Flerlage

Humans aren’t the only ones that call Venice and the Suncoast home. We share this beautiful area with incredible animal life. The natural landscape and wildlife diversity is one of the reasons that living in Venice so great and it is something that should be celebrated and protected!

One of the favorite creatures that also make their home in Venice are loggerhead sea turtles! The Suncoast has the largest concentration of loggerhead sea turtles on the west coast of Florida. These wonderful animals are about to start their nesting season in Sarasota County. Every year between May and October, these sea turtles nest on the beach. At night time, hatchlings come out of their shells and utilize the moonlight to find their way to the gulf. Unfortunately, artificial light along the beach can cause confusion and disorientation for these hatchlings causing them to lose their way. This is one of the reasons why only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survives to reach adulthood!

BUT you can help the sea turtle hatchlings! Join the Sea Turtle Conservancy for their Sea Turtle Lighting Workshop on Wednesday, April 5th from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Venice City Hall (401 West Venice Avenue). You will learn about the problems with direct and indirect light on the beach and simple, safe lighting solutions that can be used instead. Let's help all the hatchlings succeed in their journey to the sea!
