Transition Your Outdoor Spaces from Summer to Fall!

by Nick and Beth Flerlage

With cooler temperatures, Fall is the perfect season to enjoy your home's outdoor living spaces in Florida. Spruce up your Suncoast patio, porch, loggia, or backyard this autumn and create the perfect cozy spot for you and your family to enjoy time outside. Focus on these design elements to transition your space from summer to fall.

COLOR. Use neutral colors as your overall base for the outdoor area. This allows you to easily transition between all of the seasons of the year. Switch out those beachy, bright hues of blues and greens, which are perfect for Florida summers, with oranges and reds that evoke the stunning colors of fall.

FURNITURE. The weather in the Suncoast allows residents to enjoy just as much time outside as inside. Your outdoor furniture should be just as comfortable as that inside your home since you can utilize the space year-round. Consider versatile, comfy pieces such as daybeds, outdoor swings, hooded chairs, and chaise lounges. Think about materials such as wicker, metal, and dark woods that are more seasonally appropriate in fall.

LIGHTING. The days get shorter as the year progresses so make sure you add some lighting to your outdoor living spaces. String bulbs, lanterns, and chandeliers can all add a beautiful ambiance to the space.

ACCENTS. Additional design elements can keep you nice and cozy outside this fall. Add hanging curtains to the space that can blow beautifully in the breeze. Put some throws on the furniture to cuddle up in on chillier nights. Keep your feet warm with an outdoor rug. Although the nights will stay relatively warm throughout the season, consider adding an outdoor fireplace to the space for some extra comfort. It will quickly become your family's favorite spot to gather at the end of the day.

Assessing Damage After Hurricane Irma

by Nick and Beth Flerlage

Hurricane Irma caused much damage throughout the Suncoast area. Our hearts go out to all of the families in our communities and throughout Florida as life transitions back to normal in the wake of the storm. Although the storm has passed, it is important to continue to stay safe and aware of your surroundings. If you are returning to your Suncoast home in order to inspect for damage, remain cautious and follow these recommendations:

  • Avoid any objects or trees touching power lines.

  • Stay far away from puddles that are close to electrical sources.

  • Wait until you get word from city officials to drink tap water and make sure that the sewage system is running properly.

  • If anything in your home is wet, turn off the main fuse box before unplugging appliances.

  • Check your refrigerator for spoiled food, if your home has power.

  • Do not place any storm debris in the street or by utility meters and storm drains.

  • Be careful when handling anything that runs on electricity or gas.

  • Take photos of any damage inside or outside of your home.

  • Drive with caution throughout your neighborhood and city.

  • Continue to listen to the radio or check with local authorities for any updates on disaster relief efforts.

  • Let your family know that you are safe.
